Adjunct Faculty - Lindsay Shen

Lindsay Shen is a design historian who has been living in China since February 2007. She grew up in Scotland, and graduated from the University of St. Andrews with an M.A. (1989,) and Ph.D. (1993,) in Art History. After teaching at the University of Wales, she moved to Minnesota, USA, where she worked as the Director of The Goldstein Museum of Design at the University of Minnesota.

Her research interests have focused on material culture as an expression of identity, the influence of place on design, and the fashion industry. In Minnesota she curated several exhibitions on contemporary design, and has published widely in both academic and popular publications.

Over the course of her career she has worked extensively in museums in Britain and America, as a professional, consultant and volunteer. She is committed to helping further the role of museums in preserving material culture.

Lindsay, her Shanghainese husband and two young sons returned to China earlier this year, where Lindsay has been working as a freelance writer and editor. She joins the China Center as an Adjunct Faculty member, teaching a course on Research Methods and Practice.

What Students Say

"The contacts that were provided to me for my internship, my Junior Research Project, and my independent study have made these studies run smoothly, and they have succeeded in guiding my interests into unexplored regions of the subjects concerned."
