If you arrive early in Shanghai and are on a limited budget, we recommend you stay at the Captain Hostel. This hostel is centrally located and walking distance to the famous Shanghai Bund, with excellent views of the Pujiang River from the rooftop bar. Room rates range from CNY 60 for a "sailor bunk" in a room with six to eight persons to CNY 450 for a private room on the fourth floor (with 20% discount if you book online).

Bailemen Hotel

If you arrive early in Shanghai, and you are on a more generous budget, we recommend you stay at the Bailemen Hotel. This hotel is centrally located next door to the Pudong International Airport Bus Terminal, and is at the Jing'an stop on line two of the Shanghai subway. The Jing'an Buddhist Monastery is across the street and it is just a short walk east on West Nanjing Road to the Shanghai business center, with a wide variety of shopping, restaurants and a World Link clinic. Room rates range from CNY 308 for a standard double to CNY 495 for a luxury double. To reach the hotel from the Pudong International Airport, take the airport bus line 2 from the airport terminal to the bus terminus and walk west on West Nanjing Road for one block. The hotel is located on the same side of the street (north) across the intersection of Huashan Road.

Hangzhou

Hangzhou International Youth Hostel

If you arrive early in Hangzhou and are on a limited budget, we recommend you stay at the Hangzhou International Youth Hostel. The hostel is centrally located on the east side of West Lake, directly across the street from the China Arts Institute and behind the Channel 9 club. Room rates range from CNY 220/day for a lake-view room with a king-size bed, CNY 160/day for a double with private bath, CNY 100/day for a double with public bath, CNY 50/day for a bed in a quadruple room or just CNY 40/day for a six to eight bed dormitory room.

Hou Niao Youth Hostel

If rooms at the Hangzhou International Youth Hostel are already booked during this busy season or if you prefer to live closer to campus, the Hou Niao Youth Hostel is conveniently located adjacent to the Yuquan Campus and offers clean and inexpensive accommodations. The price for a four to six bed dormitory room is CNY 50 (CNY 40 with discount), while doubles range from CNY 138 to 198 depending on type and available discounts. All rooms include ADSL connections, air-conditioning, and shower. Note, however, that this hostel is, well, hostile to Japanese nationals, who according to their online promotional literature are expressly not welcome until Japan fully apologizes for aggression against China during the Second World War.

Directions: Driving or walking south of the front entrance of Zhejiang University on Yugu Road, take the first right at the T-section into the Sichuan food district known as Qingzhiwu (there is a public bathroom on the southwest corner) just above the pond. The hostel is the brightly colored house about a hundred meters in on the right side of the lane.

Lily Hotel

If you arrive early in Hangzhou, and you are on a more generous budget, we recommend you stay at the Lily Hotel. The hotel is located walking distance to Yuquan campus, Zhejiang University, and to West Lake. Room rates start as low as CNY 368 (reduced to CNY 270 during the off-season and as low as CNY 250 if you book online at C-Trip) for a standard single room plus 15% sales tax.
