The per semester expenses for fulltime students at the China Center for fall 2007 and spring 2008 are as follows and in USD:

Tuition and fees:* USD 12,340
Center fee: USD 2,350
Room/board:** USD 1,850
International travel: USD 800
Health Insurance: USD 275
TOTAL: USD 17,625 (est. per semester)

Explanation of estimated expenses

Long Island University Board of Trustees sets tuition and fees for each coming year in the month of July. Students will be billed by Long Island University for their tuition and university fees, and International Administration fee for a total of USD 12,350*, in addition to room/board charges (USD 1,850), center fees (USD 2,350), health insurance (USD 275) and international travel to the China Center (USD 800) for a total of USD 17,625.

Financial Aid is not applied to the student account for at least five weeks into each semester, so students should plan to bring enough money to cover their initial expenses. Students should also budget an additional USD 800-1,000 per semester for academic supplies and personal needs.

Not included in estimated costs is travel to the U.S. departure city, passport visa fees, and recommended inoculations. These additional costs may add several hundred dollars to the year's budget and will vary considerably from student to student, depending on the particular situation and semester plans.

When a student withdraws, the university will refund tuition and room/board fees according to the following schedule: Cancellation prior to beginning of semester or session: Complete refund, except for deposit and applicable registration fee. Refund schedule for Fall/Spring semester, determined by time of withdrawal: 1st calendar week: 90% refund; 2nd calendar week: 75% refund; 3rd calendar week: 50% refund; 4th calendar week: 25% refund; after 4th week: No Refund.

Explanation of room/board expenses

Room/board stipends are wired directly to the China Center for all officially registered students. Each month the Academic Director transfers a portion of the Room/board stipend directly into the student's Bank of China savings account, which will be opened by each student during the orientation week. This portion is calculated by subtracting USD 150 from the total room/board stipend of USD 1,850, which will be used to pay for accommodations while on extended field trips. In addition, a required deposit of USD 60 will be subtracted to insure the China Center key, locker key, and library books, and an additional optional deposit of USD 80 may be subtracted to insure the return of any center cell phone borrowed by a student, both of which may also be used to cover any unpaid electricity, phone or rent charges at the off-campus university apartments.

The remainder will be divided by the total number of weeks (13) times the number of weeks per month (typically 4). For the 2007-2008 academic year this amount will be not less than $400 per month with a $140 deposit refunded on the last day of the semester. This amount is transferred directly to the student's domestic bank account during the first week of each month and typically on the first workday of the month. Students on academic probation or with outstanding balances on their Long Island University bursar accounts are not officially registered and will not receive room/board stipends, and should therefore contact the Friends World Registrar immediately.
